May 2026 is here, and we’re celebrating with one of the most joyful paintings ever created! This month’s Art Club Monthly Kids Box features Henri Matisse’s iconic masterpiece The Dance (1910), and your little artists are going to LOVE it!

Meet Henri Matisse: The King of Colors! 👑
Henri Matisse loved bright, happy colors! He once said, “Creativity takes courage!” and we think that’s the perfect motto for young artists.
Here’s a fun fact your kids will love: When Matisse was 20 years old, he got sick with appendicitis. While he was stuck in bed recovering, his mom brought him art supplies to keep him busy. He fell SO in love with painting that he called it finding “paradise”! His dad wanted him to be a lawyer, but Matisse decided to follow his heart and become an artist instead. 💖
Later in life, when Matisse’s hands hurt too much to hold a paintbrush, he came up with a brilliant new way to create art. He painted sheets of paper in bright colors, then used scissors to cut out shapes! He called it “painting with scissors,” and it became one of his most famous techniques.
The Dance: Pure Joy on Canvas 🌈
Matisse painted The Dance in 1910 for a Russian art collector. The painting shows five people holding hands and dancing in a circle. It’s HUGE (over 8 feet tall!) and uses only THREE bold colors:
- Red for the dancers (showing energy and excitement!)
- Blue for the sky (peaceful and infinite)
- Green for the ground (earth and nature)
The painting celebrates movement, friendship, and pure happiness! Today, it hangs in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, where over 5 million people visit every year to see it. It has a partner painting called Music that hangs right next to it! 🏛️
